Established in 1901 by MacDowell Colony founders Marian and Edward MacDowell, the Monadnock Country Club in course, originally private, it became public in 1932. It narrowly avoided permanent closure following a 2016 bankruptcy, reopening in 2017 under new, local management to preserve its "old-school" character.
